What goes in an llms.txt file

The format is plain Markdown with a predictable structure, so AI models can read it quickly:

# Your Site Name

> One sentence on what the site or business is.

Optional extra context in plain sentences.

## Section name
- [Page title](https://yoursite.com/page): What the page covers

## Optional
- [Privacy policy](https://yoursite.com/privacy): Pages that can be skipped

Tips for a better file

  • Keep the summary specific: who you serve and what you do, not a slogan.
  • Include the pages you would want an AI to cite: services, pricing, guides, FAQs, documentation.
  • Leave out thin pages like tag archives, pagination and login screens.
  • Make sure robots.txt does not block the AI crawlers you want reading the file.
  • Update it when you add important pages.

Questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives AI models a short summary of the site and a curated list of its most important pages, with a one-line description of each. It was proposed in 2024 as a simple way to help language models find and understand a site's key content.

Does llms.txt help with AI search visibility?

It can help AI tools and agents that look for it understand your site faster, and it costs nothing to add. Support varies across AI companies, so treat it as one part of GEO alongside crawlable pages, clear structure, schema and content that answers questions directly.

Where do I upload llms.txt?

Save the file as llms.txt and upload it to the root folder of your site, the same place as robots.txt. On most hosts that is public_html. It should load at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

How does this generator pick pages?

It reads your sitemap (from robots.txt or the usual sitemap locations), falls back to links on your homepage, then pulls each page's title and meta description. Pages are grouped into sections by URL path, and legal pages go into an Optional section. You can untick pages and edit everything before downloading.

Is this tool free?

Yes. There is no sign-up. Pages are fetched by our server only to build your file and are not stored.
